When Sonia Samtani first stepped into the world of mental health two decades ago, therapy wasn’t a topic people in Hong Kong discussed openly. Hypnotherapy, in particular, was often misunderstood—shrouded in myths and skepticism. But Sonia saw a gap, a need, and an opportunity to make a difference.

“I remember being the youngest person in the room at industry events,” Sonia reflects. “Mental health wasn’t a mainstream conversation back then, and I often felt like the lone voice advocating for it."
Starting her career during a time when therapy was rarely spoken about, Sonia faced her fair share of challenges. Skepticism, curiosity, and even hesitation were common reactions to her work. But rather than being discouraged, she understood that these reactions came from a lack of exposure. “I knew it wasn’t personal,” she says. “It was simply unfamiliar territory for many people. My goal was to educate and show how powerful the mind can be in transforming every aspect of life—from health to relationships to performance.”

Her early days were humble and full of determination. Sonia’s first office was a small room inside her father’s workspace, where she conducted private sessions with clients who approached hypnotherapy with cautious hope. Each breakthrough she witnessed reaffirmed her purpose. “Seeing clients move from fear to confidence, or overcome deeply ingrained limiting beliefs, was the most rewarding part of my work,” she shares.
There were moments that felt like milestones—like the time she worked with Formula Renault Race Car Driver Dan Wells. “Helping Dan with his mental focus during races was a game-changer,” Sonia recalls.

“He won every single race during our time together, and the recognition we received from that was a turning point. It helped people see hypnotherapy as a credible tool for performance enhancement.”
As her practice grew, so did her passion for spreading awareness. Sonia began organizing workshops, hosting seminars, and eventually training others to become hypnotherapists. Over the years, she’s seen a dramatic shift in how mental health is perceived in Hong Kong. “It’s amazing to see how far we’ve come. Therapy is no longer seen as something you turn to only when you’re ‘broken.’ People are starting to view it as an ongoing practice, like going to the gym—but for your mind.”
Even with this progress, Sonia believes there’s still work to be done.

“I’d love for mental health care to be as normalized as visiting a doctor for physical pain,” she explains. “It’s about building emotional resilience, expanding awareness, and consistently nurturing your mental well-being.”
Looking back on her journey, Sonia feels immense pride—not just for her own growth, but for the thriving mental health community in Hong Kong. She remains committed to organizing events, raising awareness, and training the next generation of therapists.
“It’s been a privilege to be part of this evolution,” Sonia says. “The shifts I’ve seen are proof that when we work together, we can create a community where people are happier, healthier, and more conscious in their daily lives.”
Sonia’s story is a reminder of the power of persistence, education, and compassion. Through her work, she’s not only transformed individual lives but has also helped shape a cultural shift—bringing mental health into the heart of Hong Kong’s well-being conversation.
